What is the MSBA Lawyer Referral System?
The Minnesota State Bar Association LRS is a program which provides the name(s)
of lawyers who practice a particular type of law in the county chosen by a
member of the public. If there is no match in the specific county selected,
the system will provide a list of lawyers in other parts of Minnesota who practice
the type of law requested. LRS is not a reduced fee or pro bono (free) service;
you will need to discuss with the lawyer his/her fees when you meet.
Is there a fee to use the MSBA Lawyer
Referral System?
No. There is no charge for receiving a referral from our system.
Will the lawyer charge a fee?
Lawyers who are part of the Minnesota State Bar Association Referral Service
agree to provide a free 30-minute initial consultation, either by phone or
in person. After the initial consultation, the lawyer generally will charge
his/her regular fees. There are various types of fee arrangements that are
possible. You should discuss fees with the lawyer at the initial consultation
and ask to receive a written explanation of what the fees will be to handle
your legal matter.
You should not expect to “solve” your problem during the initial
consultation; during this brief time you can expect to have the lawyer give
you a general idea about whether you have a problem that could be helped by
taking legal action, what legal action(s) might be appropriate, and the resources
(time and money) necessary to go ahead with such legal action(s).
How are lawyers selected to be part
of the Referral System?
Membership is open to any Minnesota licensed lawyer who pays a fee to be listed
with the LRS and who agrees to abide by the Rules of Operation.
Do you have a list of lawyers who will
provide free services?
When a lawyer works at no cost, it is known as pro bono work. Unfortunately,
the Minnesota State Bar Association does NOT provide referrals to pro bono
lawyers. All members of the LRS expect to be paid for their services.
Do you have a list of lawyers who will
work out a payment plan?
No. The Referral System does NOT maintain any information about the lawyers
and their payment arrangements. You can ask the lawyer about this before the
brief consultation.
